Risk of Rain 2 False Son is a playable survivor from Seekers of the Storm, unlocked through Purified Freedom. His central mechanic is Growth: bonus maximum health from eligible sources increases aspects of his skills, including Lunar Spike capacity. Ordinary health gained from leveling does not provide the same Growth benefit. Build decisions therefore involve more than choosing between melee damage and a larger health bar.
Keep the playable survivor separate from the False Son boss encountered on the expansion route. They share a name and visual identity, but a boss attack or boss balance change is not automatically a description of the survivor's corresponding skill. This guide focuses on using the survivor's club, spike resource, movement, and laser options after the unlock.
Understand the two states of Lunar Tampering
Lunar Tampering changes the benefits you receive according to unused and used Lunar Spikes. Each unused spike provides attack speed and armor. Used spikes instead provide movement speed and health regeneration. Spending the secondary therefore changes both your immediate attacks and your defensive or movement state.
| Spike state | Benefit per spike | Practical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Unused Lunar Spike | 5% attack speed and 2.5 armor | Support close-range attacks and a more armored approach |
| Used Lunar Spike | 5% movement speed and 2.5 health regeneration | Support repositioning and recovery while charges return |
This is a trade rather than a rule that spikes must always be saved or always be emptied. Holding them supports the club's attack rhythm and armor; throwing them gives ranged damage, applies Lunar Ruin, and changes the passive toward movement and regeneration. Use the state that fits the next action you need.
When retreating, spent spikes can be useful because the movement and regeneration state helps the recovery route. When you are about to commit to close-range pressure, unused spikes can support a different plan. Look at the charge count before deciding why False Son suddenly feels faster or slower during the same encounter.
Distinguish bonus health Growth from ordinary leveling
Growth responds to bonus maximum health gained through items or other qualifying sources, not the normal health increase from leveling. This is the reason a maximum-health item can do more for False Son than simply increase the amount of damage he can take. It can expand the skill resources that feed Lunar Tampering and other abilities.

Lunar Spikes starts with four charges before added Growth. More bonus health can add more stocks. The increased capacity affects how many spikes you can keep unused for the armor and attack-speed state, or spend for ranged attacks and the movement and regeneration state.
The relationship is not a simple promise that every health item always grants the same number of charges. Growth has thresholds, and additional stocks become more expensive in bonus-health terms as capacity increases. Check the actual stock change after a pickup instead of extrapolating a fixed ratio from an early upgrade.

Bison Steak is one example of a maximum-health item that can contribute to the system. Its value is different on a survivor whose skills respond to bonus health. Even so, a Growth-focused inventory still needs enough damage and mobility to clear the current encounter. A larger resource pool does not automatically make a slow, unsafe attack sequence work.
Use the club and slam as separate commitments
Club of the Forsaken provides a 450% damage swing. Holding the primary and secondary buttons charges a slam for 1000% damage. The slam takes time to prepare, so make the choice based on the enemy opening rather than assuming every melee moment permits the full charge safely.
Releasing before the slam is fully charged performs an overhead swing instead. That makes input timing meaningful: a short hold and a completed charge are not the same attack. Practice the charge duration in a situation where a missed timing does not force you to remain in a dangerous cluster.
A fully charged airborne slam causes False Son to descend rapidly and attack when he reaches the ground. The landing point becomes the location of the attack, so choose the destination before committing. Gaining height without looking at the enemy position can produce an impressive movement that lands outside useful range.
Step of the Brothers can be used during the charged club sequence without canceling it. Meridian's Will behaves differently and cancels the charge. If you change the utility, relearn that part of the combo instead of assuming both movement skills preserve the same prepared slam.
Do not build around an old or unresolved bug involving the slam's proc behavior across runs. The practical plan is to use a supported swing or slam on an appropriate opening, then return to a safe position. A reproducible input sequence matters more than a claimed persistent exploit.
Apply Lunar Ruin before the attacks that benefit from it
Lunar Spikes throws a spike for 200% damage and applies Lunar Ruin. Each stack of the debuff increases incoming damage to the enemy by ten percent for five seconds and reduces its healing. Additional applications refresh the existing stacks' duration, which makes the secondary useful as preparation for a larger damage window.
The order matters. A spike applied after your strongest attack does not retroactively improve that attack. When it is safe, use spikes to mark an important target, then follow with the club or laser while the debuff remains active. Continue watching the timer through enemy movement instead of treating the effect as a permanent vulnerability.
Lunar Spikes is Agile, allowing its use while sprinting. That gives you a ranged contribution during movement and another way to change Lunar Tampering's state without standing still. It can be useful when a close-range approach is temporarily unsafe, though it does not eliminate the need to manage incoming attacks.
Lunar Stakes is the alternate secondary. It pierces enemies, creates delayed lightning strikes, and counts as two Lunar Spikes for the relevant resource relationship. Its base capacity and Growth rate differ from the default, so changing the secondary changes the number and timing of actions in your loop.
A Stake shatters when it contacts a surface. Line up the target path and understand where terrain will stop it. The delayed lightning also means the visible projectile hit is not the entire effect. Evaluate the combined attack rather than expecting the same immediate behavior as repeatedly throwing default spikes.
Choose movement from the combo you want to preserve
Step of the Brothers is a short dash with two uses. It can continue while you are charging or firing Club of the Forsaken and Laser of the Father. This makes it useful for adjusting position within those attacks rather than forcing every movement to end the damage action.
Keep a charge available when a laser window may need correction. Spending both uses on routine travel before the encounter removes a tool that can reposition during an otherwise slow firing state. Use the dash with a planned destination; moving through an enemy line is not equivalent to eliminating every threat in that line.
Meridian's Will teleports, pulls enemies, and provides Energized Core, which triples Lunar Tampering's effects for its duration. Growth lengthens that duration. The benefit therefore follows your current spike state: a passive built around unused stocks and one built around spent stocks lead to different useful outcomes during the buff.
You can hold the utility input to aim the teleport destination and continue moving while aiming. The target must be an appropriate surface or flying enemy. More movement speed can extend the range, so inspect the destination carefully after an inventory change instead of relying on a memorized distance.
Energized Core does not stack its multiplier when repeatedly refreshed. Reusing the skill refreshes duration rather than producing an unlimited sequence of tripled passive bonuses. Plan around the actual buff window and the utility's movement, not a hypothetical multiplier chain.
Fire Laser of the Father from a position you can hold
Laser of the Father charges a rapidly hitting laser. A complete charge gives its stronger damage state, while firing earlier trades preparation for reduced damage. Growth increases its duration. The skill is powerful when the target remains available and you can maintain a useful firing line.
The cost is movement. False Son slows significantly while charging and firing, so check nearby enemies and projectile routes before committing. Step of the Brothers can reposition without canceling the beam, which is one reason to preserve a utility charge. Using the club cancels the laser, so the primary is not a separate simultaneous damage action during that sequence.
The laser supports recovery of spike charges while firing by greatly reducing their cooldowns. Do not interpret the simplified refill language as an unconditional instant restoration of every Lunar Spike or Lunar Stake the moment you press the special. Watch the actual resource state as the skill operates.
A longer Growth-supported beam is an opportunity only if it remains safe and aimed. You can cancel a damaging window when the position becomes untenable. Losing part of the theoretical beam damage can be the correct trade if staying in place would end the run.
Laser Burst is the alternate special: a piercing shot without the default laser's charging sequence. It refills half of the Lunar Spike resource and gains stock through Growth at a different rate. It suits a shorter attack window, while the default rewards holding a line for repeated damage. Choose from the encounter rhythm rather than ranking the alternatives solely by one displayed hit value.
Balance Growth with damage and escape options
Bonus health supports the distinctive skill scaling, but the inventory must still solve ordinary combat requirements. You need an attack sequence that reaches the target, sufficient damage to end the fight, and a route away when close pressure becomes unsafe. A health-heavy inventory that takes too long to kill enemies can create more incoming attacks than its larger health pool compensates for.
Watch which Lunar Tampering state supports your next move. Hold stocks when the armor and attack speed fit a club opening; spend them when debuffing, ranged damage, or recovery movement is more valuable. Then use the selected laser to contribute damage and restore the spike loop in the way that special actually supports.
If the survivor feels inconsistent, inspect those state changes before replacing the entire build. A different charge count, Growth threshold, or utility choice can alter the sequence without any change to the enemy. False Son becomes more understandable when you track bonus health, available spikes, the current passive benefits, and the safe window for a charged attack as separate decisions.
