Risk of Rain 2 Equipment Drone

Quick Answer

An Equipment Drone permanently takes your held equipment and uses it automatically. Repairing costs that equipment, not gold. You cannot swap it afterward or reclaim it by destroying the drone.

An Equipment Drone takes the equipment you are holding, then automatically uses it against nearby enemies. Repairing one costs an equipment rather than gold. The transfer is permanent: you cannot swap its equipment afterward, and destroying the drone does not return the item. Give it a spare equipment that works well with automatic activation, rather than something your survivor needs to use at a particular moment.

The attraction is its built-in cooldown reduction. The drone's description rounds this to an 80% reduction; its hidden items reduce the cooldown by 79.411%, letting it activate equipment almost five times as often. That frequency can be useful, but it does not give the drone your inventory, your judgment, or the ability to buy things.

Identify the drone before interacting

Equipment Drone with its equipment mounting

The Equipment Drone is a mechanical utility drone. Its listed base health is 250, with 75 additional health per level, and its health regeneration starts at 8 with 1.6 more per level. Its listed movement speed is 10 m/s and its armor is 0. These are identification and scaling details, rather than a guarantee that a repaired drone will survive a particular encounter.

Check the interaction carefully if you are carrying an equipment you want to keep. Other drones can train you to expect a gold purchase, but this one uses a different payment. If you interact while holding your emergency equipment, you have paid with that equipment even if you only intended to buy another distraction.

The drone also cannot be combined in a Drone Combiner Station. Do not repair one expecting to fold it into a stronger combined drone later. Judge the equipment transfer on its own value.

Repair one without sacrificing your main equipment

  1. Find the damaged Equipment Drone and identify which equipment you currently hold.
  2. Decide whether that equipment is expendable for the rest of the run.
  3. If a different equipment is available nearby, pick up the one you intend to donate first.
  4. Repair the drone with the equipment in your active equipment slot.
  5. Confirm that the drone is using the donated item, then return to any equipment you deliberately left on the ground.

The important preparation happens before the interaction. Once the transfer is complete, there is no equipment exchange menu on the drone. Finding a better item later does not let you upgrade the existing drone by replacing its original equipment.

An equipment that was on cooldown can activate immediately when handed over. This is useful when deciding whether an unwanted equipment still has value, but it also means a dangerous equipment may start affecting the fight immediately. Do not assume that the cooldown visible on your survivor will delay the drone's first use.

Equipment that tolerates automatic use

Prefer effects that are useful whenever there are enemies nearby. Direct damage and ally buffs are easier to hand over than tools intended for a specific purchase, a carefully chosen escape, or an item-dependent interaction.

EquipmentWhy it can fit the droneLimitation to remember
Disposable Missile LauncherFires a swarm of missiles, giving the drone an obvious offensive taskThe drone still chooses when to activate it
Royal CapacitorCalls down a lightning strike on a targeted monster and stuns nearby monstersYou give up personal control over target selection and timing
Gorag's OpusGrants a frenzy to you and your alliesIts value depends on allies being able to use the buff during combat
The Back-upCalls Strike Drones to fight for the teamAutomatically summoned support is different from saving the equipment for a chosen encounter
Radar ScannerCan reveal interactables regularlyThe Equipment Drone only activates it when it has an enemy target

Disposable Missile Launcher fires 12 missiles for 12 × 300% damage. Royal Capacitor deals 3000% damage to its targeted monster and stuns nearby monsters. These effects have clear purposes without requiring the drone to understand a complex item combination.

Gorag's Opus grants a seven-second frenzy, increasing movement speed by 50% and attack speed by 100%. The Back-up calls four Strike Drones for 25 seconds. Consider whether automatic support benefits your run more than keeping those effects available on demand.

Radar Scanner is a more conditional choice. It reveals interactables within 500 meters for ten seconds, but the drone is not an independent exploration assistant that scans whenever you wish. If no enemy is being targeted, waiting beside the drone does not guarantee an activation. Donate it when combat-triggered scanning is useful, rather than relying on it to inspect an empty stage at a precise time.

Equipment that loses important functions

Equipment Drones can carry and activate equipment, but they do not have your item collection or the other abilities that some effects expect. A working activation is not the same as a useful activation.

The Crowdfunder is a particularly clear mismatch. It spends gold to fire bullets, and Equipment Drones have no gold. Giving the drone The Crowdfunder does not create a free source of its usual firing behavior.

Executive Card is also poorly matched. Its value comes from gold purchases: it returns 10% of the spent gold and keeps other multishop terminals open when you buy from one. A drone that makes no purchases cannot reproduce the survivor's shopping benefit.

Forgive Me Please triggers on-kill effects, but the drone does not inherit the items that make those effects valuable on your character. Do not assume that the same doll combination follows the equipment when you hand it over.

Milky Chrysalis, Ocular HUD, Super Massive Leech, Fuel Array, and an already consumed Trophy Hunter's Tricorn are likewise listed as offering little benefit in ordinary Equipment Drone use. This does not mean every activation is impossible; it means the equipment's main purpose may depend on capabilities or resources the drone does not have.

The practical question is what the equipment does for this drone specifically. An item that is excellent for your survivor can be a poor donation if its value comes from your inventory, your money, or a decision only you can make.

Treat friendly-fire equipment as a separate decision

Helfire Tincture and Glowing Meteorite are more dangerous than routine offensive donations because their effects can hurt allies. The fast cooldown makes their downside more persistent, not just their upside.

Helfire Tincture ignites all characters within 15 meters for 12 seconds. Its damage is based on the holder's maximum health. Equipment Drones use the ambient run level, so the damage can remain relevant against monsters as the run progresses, while also becoming more threatening to the player.

With the drone's cooldown reduction, the Tincture cooldown is about nine seconds, shorter than the effect's 12-second duration. Enemies nearby can therefore cause the drone to remain burning almost continuously. A useful damage source can become a moving hazard whenever it follows you into close quarters.

The Tincture cannot kill its own holder through its burn, but that protection does not make the drone safe from external damage. A drone left at critically low health can still die to an enemy hit. Its equipment then disappears with it.

Glowing Meteorite rains damaging meteors for 20 seconds and harms all characters. Its base 140-second cooldown becomes short enough on the drone to leave only about eight seconds between activations. As the drone's damage increases, those repeated meteors can threaten the survivor more severely.

Choose these combinations only when you are prepared to deal with their friendly-fire effects. The donation is permanent, so discovering that you dislike the behavior does not give you a simple equipment-swap solution.

Where Equipment Drones can appear

Equipment Drone model visible in the logbook

Equipment Drone spawns are tied to eligible environments. The listed base-game environments include Scorched Acres, Abyssal Depths, Siren's Call, Sundered Grove, and Sky Meadow. These are places to watch for the drone while completing your existing route, rather than guarantees that one appears on every visit.

Expansion environments in its listed pool include Aphelian Sanctuary and Sulfur Pools from Survivors of the Void; Treeborn Colony, Golden Dieback, and Helminth Hatchery from Seekers of the Storm; Conduit Canyon from Alloyed Collective; and Damp Caverns and Tenebrous Quagmire from Hallowed Concepts.

A stage belonging to a disabled expansion cannot be treated as an ordinary available search location. Check the content enabled for the run before planning around an expansion stage. Avoid extending a route solely because you expect a guaranteed Equipment Drone at one specific point: the environment list describes eligible spawns, not a fixed pickup.

What happens when the drone dies

The equipment carried by a destroyed drone is lost. Repairing the damaged drone requires another equipment, making each repair a fresh donation. You are not paying to recover the original item.

This changes the cost calculation for expensive or rare equipment. A disposable equipment can be worth giving away for extra pressure or a distraction, while an equipment that anchors your survival plan may cost much more than the drone contributes.

An Equipment Drone can draw enemy attention even when its equipment is not especially effective. That can be useful if you have a spare item you do not want to hold. It is still a temporary benefit attached to a vulnerable ally, rather than a permanent addition to your survivor's item build.

Operator interactions and elite equipment

Operator can command an Equipment Drone to ram an enemy for 450% damage with a stunning attack. Fuel Array changes this interaction: the impact damage is replaced by the Fuel Array explosion, and the drone instantly dies. Treat the equipment as sacrificed, rather than as an ordinary reusable offensive tool.

Elite equipment also varies in usefulness. Some aspects provide immediate utility, while others need additional drone support to benefit from their on-hit effects. Spare Drone Parts can supply drones with extra offensive capabilities, but that is a separate item interaction; it does not mean the Equipment Drone naturally receives all the items on your survivor.

Before donating, make one final check: the equipment should work with an automated enemy target, its loss should be acceptable, and any friendly-fire behavior should be manageable. Those three conditions are more useful than judging the donation solely by how powerful the equipment feels when you control it yourself.
