Best for

Monsoon or Eclipse solo or co-op runs with sustained mid-range firing and deliberate control of small threats.

Avoid if

You fire from extreme range into damage falloff or stack damage while leaving mobility and crowd clear unresolved.

How it works

Double Tap provides repeated eligible hits, letting attack speed and on-hit effects work together. The October update corrected a lower-than-intended attack-speed cap and added the unlocked Sabotage special.

Equipment priority

Equipment priority
PriorityEquipmentInstruction
FirstMovement and useful damageStay in an effective range without standing in return fire.
ThenAttack speed and on-hit varietyAdd effects that address crowds or a durable target.
ConditionalCritical recovery or alternate specialUse Scythe only with critical support and choose the special you can aim reliably.

Build order

  1. Use the available secondary and utility; alternates are not prerequisites for starting a run.
  2. Take movement and one useful damage source.
  3. Build attack speed plus applicable on-hit effects.
  4. Add crowd clear or recovery according to the pressure you are actually facing.

How to play

Strafe at an effective range, maintain primary hits and use the secondary on useful targets. Keep utility ready for an incoming attack rather than spending it only on travel.

What can break the build

Double Tap has range falloff. On-kill effects need enemies to die, and more attack speed does not fix missed shots. Sabotage requires placement and detonation; old infinite Runic Lens/ATG proc assumptions were fixed in the October update.

Evidence limit

Checked against the October 8, 2026 2K patch notes and the survivor wiki reference on October 13, 2026. Item priorities and mode fit are editorial recommendations inferred from those mechanics. No in-game clear, DPS benchmark, win rate, or import code was tested. Build Commando around sustained, accurate hits and enough movement to keep firing safely. Double Tap gives the inventory repeated opportunities to contribute; attack speed, on-hit damage, crowd clear and recovery should support that firing route together. Buying damage while shooting from too far away or standing still leaves the core problem unresolved.

This guide keeps an available default route. Phase Blast and Tactical Slide are useful loadout options when unlocked, but Commando can start a run with Phase Round and Tactical Dive. The October 2026 Sabotage special is another unlocked choice rather than a prerequisite for the ordinary primary build.

Keep the ordinary firing route dependable

SlotSuggested choiceAvailable alternative
PrimaryDouble TapThe repeated-hit foundation
SecondaryPhase Blast when unlockedPhase Round for a ranged piercing pattern
UtilityTactical Slide when unlockedTactical Dive for the starting movement option
SpecialSuppressive FireFrag Grenade or Sabotage for a deliberate alternate plan

Use primary fire from a range where the hits are doing useful work. Moving closer is not automatically safe, so keep a route around the target rather than walking straight into it. Use the secondary to address a target or group that primary fire is not removing efficiently.

Prioritize effects that match repeated hits

Soldier's Syringe is an opportunity for faster firing. ATG Missile Mk. 1, Ukulele and Tri-Tip Dagger are candidates for applicable on-hit support when offered. These effects work through attacks that connect with a relevant target; they do not fix poor accuracy or a route where you must stop firing every time an enemy approaches.

Movement belongs in the same priority group as damage. Paul's Goat Hoof, Energy Drink and Hopoo Feather can improve the route between firing angles and the ability to leave a dangerous holdout. If you already kill targets adequately but keep getting hit during the transition, choose the pickup that addresses that transition rather than stacking another identical offensive item.

Harvester's Scythe is conditional on critical support. Cautious Slug offers a different recovery pattern that relies on disengaging. Take the option you can use in the current inventory and mode; do not list both as if either guarantees constant health while standing in enemy fire.

Reassess the inventory at the middle stages

If ordinary enemies survive long enough to surround you, add crowd clear or use the secondary on a better line. If the boss is the only delay, improve sustained target damage. If you have damage but cannot cross the stage safely, movement and defense can be the useful purchase even when a printer offers another damage stack.

On-kill effects need kills to get started. If the first enemy is taking too long to die, another on-kill pickup may not solve that opening problem. Conversely, once the build can secure kills, a crowd effect may remove more pressure than another single-target stack. The item choice guide explains these trigger distinctions.

Do not reproduce older infinite proc-chain advice. The October 8 patch fixed the potentially infinite Runic Lens and ATG Missile interaction. This build values ordinary applicable damage rather than assuming a patched loop will carry the run. The same update corrected Double Tap's lower-than-intended attack-speed cap; it supports reevaluating firing speed without inventing a new measured breakpoint.

Choose a special for the encounter you can execute

Suppressive Fire fits the repeated-hit plan and offers control against enemies that can be stunned. Use it on a useful threat while preserving utility for incoming attacks. Do not assume its stun can solve every boss mechanic.

Frag Grenade changes the plan toward an aimed, delayed area hit. Sabotage places explosives that are set off by a qualifying attack from you or an ally. If you select Sabotage, understand the placement and detonation sequence before making a burst-item plan depend on it. A new skill unlock is an opportunity to solve a specific encounter problem, not a reason to replace a familiar special without practice.

Use mode constraints to decide what to protect

For Monsoon solo, protect useful firing uptime: move, clear immediate threats and keep the route toward objectives. Do not extend the first stage indefinitely to complete an item wishlist. If you keep dying with a strong inventory, inspect the movement sequence before concluding that the build needs a rare item.

For Eclipse, avoiding repeated hits is more reliable than building around recovery after them. Keep utility available for the next dangerous attack and check the Eclipse guide for the current restrictions. The discussion does not establish a tested Eclipse clear.

In co-op, stay in an effective firing lane and use group effects where they can help the team. Allied damage can change which enemy dies first, so on-kill expectations and a Sabotage placement should account for the fight the team is actually creating.
